MENINGOCOCCAL
GROUP C CONJUGATE VACCINATIONS AND MEASLES,
MUMPS AND RUBELLA VACCINATIONS FOR TA ENTRANTS
In line with the British
National Formulary (BNF) recommendation that all University attendees
are immunised, it is advised that all TA entrants are immunised
against meningococcus serogroup C at least 10 days prior to attending
initial training . If this is conducted, the preferred vaccination
is to be the Meningococcus serogroup C conjugate vaccination. This
is regardless of age. You should check you are immunised before
joining.
Some Cadets will have
received a Meningococcal vaccination previously that may provide
protection. The current immunisation status of each individual is
to be checked and recorded. The following may have been received:
- Meningococcus serogroup C conjugate
vaccination. This is a one-off vaccination and does not require
a booster. If this has been given, an entrant will not require
further vaccination and is clear to attend training without further
delay.
- Meningococcal A+C polysaccharide
vaccine. This requires to have been administered within 3 years
from the start of training.
- Meningococcal
quadrivalent ACW135Y vaccine (more commonly administered as a
travel vaccination). This requires to have been administered within
3 years from the start of training.
Cadets are to be
encouraged to attend Phase 1 training with up to date immunisation
and to remain current throughout their training. The results are
to be recorded on a Cadet's F Med 4.
It is recommended
that all attendees are vaccinated against meningitis and measles,
mumps and rubella (MMR) . This is because the risk of contracting
meningitis is higher when living and working in close quarters with
larger numbers of people than is the case in everyday life. It is
not possible to say exactly what the level of risk is. It is thought
to be low but it should be born in mind that should you develop
these diseases they can be life threatening.
Not being
immunised also means that there is a greater chance of the disease
spreading to others - so you are potentially harming your colleagues
and family.
Any individual
who chooses to attend training having not been vaccinated does so
at their own risk.
Additional information
should be sought from the Training Major, and thereafter from
SO3 DGAT, HQ ARTD – 94344 8275 (01980 618275).
